The Sony UX-Series is innovative and unique in several ways. First is the portrait mode screen and clamshell case design. Second, the PEG-UX50 is the first Palm OS handheld to include both 802.11b WiFi and Bluetooth wireless technology (the PEG-UX40 does not have the WiFi). Third, it is the first handheld to include user-accessible FlashROM (retained even when the battery is dead) that can be used as if it were an external memory card. Lastly, it has a Sony custom-designed CPU that automatically scales itself from 8 to 125 MHz on demand.

The screen is high-resolution 480 x 320 65K color Transreflective (TFT). Like the NX/NR Series, the screen will flip around and lays closed over the keyboard for use in tablet mode. One tragic flaw in the design of this series, however, is that the screen cannot be used in portrait mode. Hopefully Sony or someone else will release some software to correct this problem.

Total memory is 104 MB: 16 MB available for storage of files and programs (traditional RAM). Additional 16 MB available for system back up(doesn't require power). Additional 29 MB available for media storage (used like a memory card).

The UX-Series also comes with a built-in camera, but for some reason its only a 640 x 480 (310K pixel) version. This makes it unsuitable for making real photo-quality prints like the NX-Series can with their 1.3 MPx cameras. In addition to taking pictures, the UX-Series allows for video recording, audio recording, and MP3 audio playback. It also has polyphonic system sounds.
