From PDA Street:
Aether Systems PacketCluster Patrol is being used by the Garden City, New York Police Department to wirelessly access real time information from the newly created New York state database known as the Counter Terrorism Network (CTN).
The company said the CTN provides a conduit to federal agencies and posts terrorist alerts and Homeland Security information to help law enforcement agencies protect the public. Garden City has also begun a trial of the handheld-based Aether PocketBlue, allowing members to access information either in their cars or on the streets.
According to Aether, for several years, Garden City police officers have relied on Aether's PacketCluster Patrol to query the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), New York Department of Criminal Justice (DCJS), the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for all fifty states and Canada, and send and receive wireless messages and alerts. By adding access to CTN via PacketCluster Patrol and providing members with PocketBlue devices, the company claims the department will improve its ability to provide real time driver and vehicle information, photos, and information to members in the field.
"We investigated several different methods to integrate our current solutions with the new Counter Terrorism Network and came to the conclusion that Aether provided the most seamless and effective solution," said Lieutenant Joe Lennon of the Garden City Police Department. "We have come to rely on PacketCluster Patrol in our cruisers and look forward to providing members in the field with PocketBlue. Our goal, as always, is to provide the very best security and safety for all our citizens. Aether's technology helps us achieve this goal."
Aether's PocketBlue is compatible with certain Palm OS, Pocket PC and BlackBerry devices.
Sounds great. I knew handhelds would eventually join the anti-terrorism fight. They have been being used in law enforcement for quite some time, it seems, given the availability of detective or police information collection apps.

I'm trying to be PC, I really am, but I'm just too into handhelds.
