ACCESS Linux 3GSM World Congress Announcements

ACCESS made a number of announcements at the 3GSM conference last week. They have demonstrated ALP on the TI OMAP processor and Marvell's processor; they launched a Global Partner Program to accelerate the growth of Mobile Linux; they released their ALP PDK and SDK to licensees and developers; and they launched Digital Life, a number of products and technologies that enable device manufacturers, operators, and application software companies to develop, distribute, and enhance a wide variety of mobile phones and converged devices.

ACCESS Releases Hiker Application Framework™ to Open Source Community

ACCESS has released another component of the ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP) to the open source community. The Hiker Application Framework provides a set of services to install and manage applicaitons securely. It also provides the ability to integrate communication between applications, such as music, messaging, etc.

Continuing to demonstrate its commitment to supporting the development of open source components optimized for the mobile and embedded device markets, ACCESS CO., LTD., announced it plans to release an Application Framework to the open source community under Mozilla® Public License (MPL) v1.1. Security features that extend the Linux® kernel are planned for release under the General Public License (GPL) v2.

PDA247 has been running a wonderful "Design the Perfect PDA" contest and today we submitted a late entry. Our perfect smartphone is a Motorola RAZR with a few simple enhancements that runs the Palm OS.

Mike Kelley, Senior VP of Engineering at PalmSource/Access, gave a presentation to developers at LinuxWorld this past August. The presentation covered various topics and we've focused here on a very cool-looking possible ALP flip-phone picture and information about skinning or theming ALP to customize the look and feel of the screens and controls.

Rebuttle to Symbian's Bashing of Mobile Linux

Symbian has posted an article on their website that bashes the use of Linux for mobile phones. The author, David Woods, talks about how the Linux core is just a small piece of the needed software for a phone and that mobile Linux distributions will suffer from quality issues, software incompatibility, and other problems. However, I believe that the Access Linux Platform (ALP) will effectively address these issues.

Cingular 3125 Flip-Phone: Why Can't Palm do That?

Cingular is preparing to release a 3125 Windows Mobile flip-phone. This is a super-thin smartphone manufactured by HTC that is already popular in Europe. I won't say its an exact RAZR clone, but its black, only .6" thick when closed and bears a striking resemblence. Ever since the RAZR was released, I have had the burning question of "Why can't Palm do that"?

David Beer's PalmSource ALP First Looks

David Beers from Pikesoft Mobile Computing has written an article based on a demo he received on the PalmSource Acess Linux Platform (ALP) at LinuxWorld in San Francisco. David felt that ALP looked very much like its Palm OS predecessor.
